Run for your health, run for Pasig River

A total of 101,010 marathon runners coming from various sectors are expected to join the largest charity run to be held in October.

The event called 10.10.10 RUN FOR PASIG RIVER is part of the “Malinaw” advocacy, one of the many initiatives of the ABS-CBN Foundation to restore the Pasig River. “Malinaw” advocacy was launched last April 15 by the Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig (another effort of the ABS-CBN Foundation) and their partners. The advocacy aims to bring back the glory of Pasig River and mobilizes various communities in action.

The event might be another glorious entry of the Philippines to the Guinness Book of World Records as thousands of runners from government offices, schools, business corporations and other sectors will merge to support the rehabilitation of Pasig River.

I’m sure even the marathon runners that I have mentioned in my previous post (the Baguio-Benguet race) will join the charity event (or social movement as organizers call it) to raise awareness and for funds to clean the river.

The clean-up drive may take time but aren’t we glad there are committed individuals and organizations who are willing to protect and preserve what is left of the once majestic river? I’m sure many of you share the same sentiments as mine. I want my children and their future children to see the Pasig River clean and sustainable.

So mark you calendar for the fun run this October because I’m sure you wouldn’t want to miss this occasion.

There will be four major starting points – SM Mall of Asia (3Km), Luneta Park (5Km), The Fort Bonifacio Global city (10Km), and SM Markina (21Km), all converging to one finish line at the SM Mall of Asia where a grand celebration will be held after.

For those who are interested to join please visit http://www.101010runforpasigriver.com. You will have to sign-up in 10.10.10 run for Pasig River to get a slot.

Second chance

More kids turn to drugs for a number of reasons such as family problem, peer influence or mere curiosity. I have heard a number of stories like these from former drug users who sought treatment in drug rehabilitation centers.

Listening to the stories of young boys and girls enlighten me as a parent. I heard from the point of view of children who are neglected by their own parents, who are either separated or too busy with their own affairs. It’s sad to know how parent-children interaction and the lack of it can destroy the lives of young people. Imagine seeing these lives in drug rehab when they should be enjoying their time with their families, friends (the good ones), school and community.

Drug rehab is the only place where drug patients are supposed to be taken for treatment by trained personnel who will facilitate their slow recovery.

Drug treatment includes detoxification or the removal of toxic substances into the patient’s system. It is during this process that patients need the full support of their families and friends; the medical staff and their own peers inside the rehab to recover and eventually send back to mainstream to lead a normal life.

Drug addiction is truly a menace and it’s everybody’s concern to do something to curb if not eradicate the problem. Parents with young children should be vigilant all the time. If you are a parent like me, try to be your children’s confidant. Win their trust not to nose around but guide them in everyway you can. Try to explain the things that you want your children to avoid or quit doing for their own good. Parents should know the people their kids are dealing with. And most importantly, listen to your kids.

For kids out there, it always pays to heed your mom’s advice. She may not be perfect, but mom’s intuition will always keep you away from trouble. Trust me.  🙂

Bloodshot eyes

I have one. I got this eye allergy through lack of sleep and spending too much time in front of the computer.

I’m studying the program manual and familiarizing myself with the different terms and application for the translation job. I’m still half-way through the manual, but my eyes were already puffy and red.

I’ve read that tired eyes can cause enlarged, dilated blood vessels in the conjunctivas or the white of the eyes. Allergies of exposure to an irritant like smoke can also cause redness. Red eyes can also indicate a systemic problem, such as an autoimmune disease.

What to do:

  • Take frequent breaks if you are working at the computer for a long period.
  • Close your eyes for one minute to rewet them and reduce the evaporation of tears before resuming work.
  • You can use lubricant to lubricate your eyes and flush out irritants.
  • Do not overused redness-reducing drops for they might worsen redness.

I don’t know what I would do if not for my ever supportive hubby who patiently explains technical words to me like when I ask him about web hosting a few months ago. Wonder why I mentioned web hosting here? I need to make a web hosting reviews before my eyes becomes irritated again. Ouch!
